Members of the Croatian Armed Forces take part in several peace support operations that are defined by resolutions and decisions of the UN Security Council. The Centre for peace support operations (SMVO) was established in Rakitje during peace support operations, aiming to train and enable individuals and military units to work in international military surroundings:
UNAMSIL /
The mission was established on 22 October 1999 to assist United Nations in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL - United Nations Assistance Mission to Sierra Leone). The initial aim of the mission was to secure main airports and enable free movement to humanitarian organization employees. Afterwards it was expanded to disarmament and demilitarisation of the warring parties and their inclusion into civil society. The command was situated in Freetown and the mission is made of 12756 soldiers, 2477 military observers and 35 members of military police. Since 1999 Croatia has taken part with ten military observers.
UNMEE /
Mission of United Nations in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE - United Nations mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea) was established in 2000. Its aim is control of cease-fire, monitoring and verification of extraction of Ethiopian forces, control of temporary security zone, coordination and providing assistance in demining and coordination of actions of UN forces and humanitarian organizations. Command posts are in Asmara and Addis Abbeba and the mission consists of 4034 military personnel, including 202 military observers. The Republic of Croatia has taken part in the mission since 2001 with seven military observers.
UNMOGIP / United Nations Mission in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP - United Nations observer group in India and Pakistan) was established in 1949. Mission mandate was established with task to assist in implementation of the agreement on ceasefire of 1 January 1949 between India and Pakistan. The mission comprises observation, reporting and investigation of complaints on breach of armistice. Mission commands of 43 military observes are situated in Rawalpindia (November-April) and Srinagar (May-October). The Republic of Croatia has taken part in the mission since 2002 with five military observers.
MINURSO / The mission was established in 1991 in Western Sahara (MINURSO - Mission de las naciones unidas para el referendum en Sahara Occidental). Task of the mission is providing support to the UN Secretary General and fulfilling the UN mandate for implementation of the referendum for self-determination of the Western Sahara peoples. The command is situated in Laayounee and the mission consists of 237 military observers, 48 support soldiers and 49 members of the civilian police. The Republic of Croatia has taken part in the mission since 2001 with two military observers.
UNMIL / United Nations mission in Liberia (UNMIL - United nations mission in Liberia) was established in 2003. It was founded by resolution of the UN Security Council to provide support to implementation of the ceasefire agreement and peacekeeping process, protection of UN personnel, institutions and civilians, support to humanitarian activities. Also to protection of human rights and assistance to reform to national security that includes training of the national police and forming of a restructured army. The command is situated in Monrovia and the mission consists of 1500 soldiers including 250 military observers, 160 staff officers and 1159 members of civilian police. The Republic of Croatia has been in mission since 2003 with three staff officers in the mission Command.
ISAF / Mandate of the mission was determined by resolution of the UN Security Council no. 1386 since 20 December 2001 and Military-technical Agreement with the transitional government aiming to stabilize the town of Kabul and create a stabile environment for actions of the transitional government of Afghanistan. Expansion of the mission (Resolution 1510/2003) relates to an initial deployment of provincial reconstruction teams in 8 major towns with a task to stabilize followed by connection of peace support forces through use of mobile military units. 6000 soldiers take part in the mission and the Republic of Croatia has been in the mission since 2003 with one Military Police platoon.
