General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces is a joint body embedded in the Ministry of Defense.
General Staff is responsible for commanding, preparing and using the Armed Forces.
Service commanders participate in making key decisions in the General Staff.
In the course of daily work, General Staff applies the principles of teamwork, whereby the units of the General Staff coordinate their activities among themselves as well as with the competent bodies of the Ministry of Defense.
General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces consists of:
- Office of the Chief of General Staff,
- Human Resources Directorate,
- Intelligence Directorate,
- Operations and Training Directorate,
- Logistics Directorate,
- Planning Directorate,
- Communications Informatics Systems Directorate,
- Command Operational Center,
- Military Police Detachment
- Military Court.
Chief of General Staff heads the General Staff. He is responsible for its work and superior to the commands, units and institutions of the Armed Forces.
Chief of General Staff is also the chief Military Advisor to the Supreme Commander and Minister of Defense.
In peace, Chief of General Staff answers and reports to the Minister of Defense for implementation of orders.
In case of direct threat and wartime, Chief of General Staff takes his orders directly form the Supreme Commander and reports to him for their implementation.

Chief of General Staff has two deputies: Deputy Chief of General Staff for Planning and Resources and Deputy Chief of General Staff for Operations.
Deputy Chiefs of General Staff answer directly to the Chief of General Staff.
Deputy Chief of General Staff for Planning and Resources is responsible for defense planning and resource management. He coordinates and supervises Human Resources Directorate, Logistics Directorate, Planning Directorate, Military Police Detachment, Military Court and National Military Representative Office at the Allied Command Transformation.
Deputy Chief of General Staff for Operations is responsible for operational planning. He coordinates and supervises Intelligence Directorate, Operations and Training Directorate, CIS Directorate, Command Operational Centre and National Military Representative Office at the Allied Command Operations.
Deputy Chief of General Staff for Planning and Resources acts for the Chief of General Staff in case of his absence.
Deputy Chief of General Staff for Operations stands for the Chief of General Staff if both the Chief of General Staff and Deputy Chief for Planning and Resources are absent.
General Staff Subordinate Units are directly subordinate to the Chief of General Staff and facilitate command and control over Armed Forces.
